As we continue to celebrate our 120th anniversary, it feels only fitting to pause and share the story of a place that has meant so much to so many: Harwood Place.Today, Harwood Place rests on 15 beautiful acres in the heart of Wauwatosa, but its story began long before our campus took shape. An early map shows that Charles Hart purchased 160 acres on August 5, 1839—land that included the very place Harwood Place calls home today. Over time, the land was divided, changed hands, and began to take on new purpose. In July 1923, the Lutheran Children’s Friend Society chose this site for the Kinderheim, a Lutheran Children’s Home. That chapter still echoes through our history in meaningful ways, as several past residents and staff either worked with the Kinderheim or adopted children through it. In 1959, the facility became a residential treatment center for boys, and in 1965, a family counseling center was added. The center remained part of the community until it closed in 1977.A new chapter began in 1983, when The Lutheran Home started submitting proposals to the city for what this beloved piece of land could become next. After years of planning and vision, Harwood Place opened its doors in December 1989 through a joint venture between The Lutheran Home and Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital. Today, Harwood Place continues that legacy of care by offering independent seniors a beautiful, safe, and dignified campus—one filled with exceptional dining, engaging social opportunities, reliable transportation, health services, and the comfort of community. And now, in 2026, Harwood Place is entering another exciting season of transformation, including an extensive remodel of our common areas. As we honor where we have been and look ahead to what is next, we would love to welcome you back. If you have not visited us in a while, we invite you to schedule a tour and see how the Harwood Place story continues to unfold.Learn more about our history at www.thelutheranhome.org/120th-anniversary/ ...
